Son of William and Lilian Smart; husband of Jeanne Smart, of Finchley, Middlesex.
William [Bill] Smart was killed standing next to his friend Edward Toms (*) whilst were advancing along a road when they were attacked by a German aircraft. Edward Toms was nearest the dry stone wall his other two mates were nearer the centre of the road. Another his friend,nearest to Edward Tom, was seriously injured in the same bombing attack and he lost his right arm. Edward Toms was completely uninjured, but William (Bill) Smart was killed.

(*)Edward Toms (Army number 14209545) enlisted in the army on the 22nd of February 1942.
He served in North Africa, Sicily and was on the invasion of France on 6th June 1944. He was wounded in August 1944 and took no further part in the actual fighting.
