Trooper William MacGregor, Three Rivers Regiment, died of wounds received in action on 17 July 1943.
William got wounded in action on the 16th of July when the TRR had cleared the town of Caltagirone and were on their was towards Piazza Armerina. When they were not far from Piazza Armerina B-Squadron of the TRR came under heavy mortar and machine gun fire. No. 3 Platoon under command of Lieutenant Melvin succeeded in giving good covering fire to the MG's on their right flank.
No. 4 troop under command of Lieutenant Stelfox were given the order to put the mortars out of action, but due to the impassable terrain they were unable to put the mortars out of action. They came under terrific mortar fire from the enemy.
A track of the lead tank was broken due to own artillery which fell too short. The crew bailed out and tried to climb on another tank and just when they did a mortar round exploded killing three men (Cpl Hulse, Trp Karcameron and Trp MacTavish). The tanks still in action were withdrawn and shelling of the road continued all night. Several vehicles were hit and put out of action and an ammunition truck was hit. Casualties were: three men killed, and eight men wounded from where two later died.
William was transported by No. 4 Field Ambulance to a Regimental Aid Post where he died of his wounds the following day. He was buried in a field grave near the SS117bis and later reburied at Agira.
William lived in Greenfield Park, Québec with his parents, one younger brother and one younger sister. He enlisted on 20 July 1940 in Montréal.
