AGIRA WAR CEMETERY, SICILY

Born 3 Giu 1919 Hampstead, Queens County, New Brunswick, Canada;
Son of James Arno Hamilton and Ella Jannie Hamilton, of Hampstead, Queen's Co., New Brunswick;
Enlisted on the 10th of July 1941 in Woodstock, New Brunswick.

Trooper Joseph Lambert Hamilton, Three Rivers Regiment. Born on 3 June 1919 in Jerusalem/Hampstead, New Brunswick and died of wounds on 21 July 1943.
Joseph served in C-Squadron of the TRR who were involved in assisting the 48th Highlanders who were trying to get to Assoro which was taken by the Hasty P's during the nightly assault on Monte Assoro. Below a part from the TRR war diaries about that day:
"The ridges, along the approaches to Assoro, were heavily defended by mortar and machine gun fire, which the infantry could not locate. The deadly fire from these concealed positions had blocked the roads with dead vehicles of all types. To even show a portion of one's anatomy to these ridges meant a terrific fuselage of enemy fire.
The approach to the mountain positions held by the enemy consisted of a steep, narrow winding road, with many "U" turns. The outside of the road was unprotected and with sheer drops of two or three hundred feet in many places.
It looked impossible, but Lieutenant Waldron, Commanding No. 1 troop, led his troop up a boulder strewn cutting and, with steady blasts of 75 mm H.E., succeeded in clearing the enemy from their positions, in the many coves in the mountain side.
The enemy had not considered that anyone would be foolhardy enough to take tanks up there. They were mistaken... and paid for it."
Officially Joseph was killed in action, but he was rushed to the hospital which was in the elementary school in Valguarnera where he succumbed of his wounds. He was buried near the school in a temporary cemetery and later reburied at Agira.
Joseph lived with his parents in Hampstead, New Brunswick. He had one brother, Dean, who also served in the Mediterranean and two sisters.
