Arriving by glider in support of the Sicily landings on the night of 9/10th July 1943.
Many of the British gliders were released by their tug-planes too early and crashed into the sea.
Glider Number 60, containing Private Partington, landed up to three miles off the coast.
The survivors clung to the wreckage and after ten minutes Private Partington and Private Tom Talbot Brett, who were strong swimmers, volunteered to try to reach the shore. Sadly, neither of them made it.
