The focal point of the enemy's defence was a sunken road, called Fosso Buttaceto, the existence of which was not realised until after dawn. Hidden in its comparative safety, many of the defenders had remained there during the barrage to emerge unscathed as soon as it stopped.
Captain D.A. Neale led the remainder of 'C' Company -which had been left behind in the ditch near the bridge - across the ground towards their original objective; his route would have taken him across the sunken road. Warned by a withering hail of bullets, in the uncertain light of day he saw for the first time this strong position and altered his line of advance towards a large eight-foot-high embarkement near a farmhouse. At once German parachutists charged with fixed bayonets, completely overrunning a party commanded by Sergeant Mitchinson. The sergeant fell on his face and shammed death so convincingly that a passing German, who paused to kich him, ran on reassured. Mitchinson opened fire with his Thomson sub-machine gun; the enemy, confused by the surprise attack from the rear, ran back to cover. Sergeant-Major Brannigan stood up in a exposed position to fire a bren gun from the hip until he fell mortally wounded. About thirty survivors managed to get behind the embarkment, while Germans went to ground in the sunken road.
