At 1130 hours 7th Battalion Black Watch reported an enemy counter attack approaching from the rear through an orange grove. The Argylls sent a platoon to block the route, while 7th Black Watch got to their feet and charged into the trees, killing or capturing twenty Germans.
Many others fell as they retreated across the open airstrip.
In this action alone the Argylls lost eighteen officers and 160 other ranks, killed , wounded and missing.
Private John Travena, batman to Major Max Kershaw of the Black Watch, saw Kershaw killed a few yards from where he was crouching.

Alle 11.30, il 7° Battaglione "Black Watch" riferì che il nemico stava avanzando attraverso un aranceto per sferrare un attacco alla loro retroguardia. Un plotone dello "Argyll" partì immediatamente per bloccare la strada, mentre il 7° "Black Watch" si gettava a sua volta tra gli alberi, uccidendo o catturando complessivamente venti tedeschi. Molti altri caddero poi mentre si ritiravano attraverso un terreno a tratti scoperto.
In quella sola azione, l' "Argyll" perdette diciotto ufficiali e centosessanta sottufficiali e soldati, fra morti, feriti e dispersi.
Il soldato semplice John Travena, attendente del Maggiore Max Kershaw, vide il suo superiore cadere ucciso a pochi passi dal punto dove lui stava acquattato
